In June, we'll get to know the hybrid Bentley Continental GT
Bentley is ending the production of W12 engines, but that doesn’t mean the brand will lack incredibly powerful models. The Crewe-based manufacturer has announced that the latest Continental GT will soon receive a new plug-in hybrid powertrain based on a V8 engine. The technology, named Ultra Performance Hybrid by the brand, will result in Bentley's most powerful production models ever.
The key figures are 780 hp and 1000 Nm, which will provide more power than the record-setting Batur model with the W12 engine, while the torque will remain the same. These values come from combining a twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric module, which can also power the car independently for up to 80 km. Overall, the new powertrain features an average CO2 emission of 50g per kilometer.
The new hybrid Bentley Continental GT with 780 hp will be unveiled this June. The new Bentley powertrain will be adapted from other powerful hybrids within the VAG group. A previously published image of the engine revealed that some parts bear VW logos. The components could come from the new Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. Its twin-turbo V8 with integrated electric assistance provides up to 680 hp. The electric motor is powered by a 25.9 kWh battery.
Additional hybrid components will negatively impact the Continental’s weight, which may exceed the 2.5-ton mark. Nevertheless, Bentley states that this model will have the highest dynamic values in the entire Continental GT family. Managing its power will be assisted by a range of active systems and all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. There will also be a rear steering axle, adaptive dampers with dual valves, electric stabilizers, and an electronically locking rear differential.
The hybrid Continental GT will be an evolution of the current car, not an entirely new generation. The overall body proportions and interior layout are expected to remain unchanged, though there will likely be minor design tweaks and technology updates. Competition is fierce, especially with the recently launched thoroughly updated Aston Martin DB12.
